Scented Leaf Pelargonium
our responsive ebook of scented geraniums

Foreword

information to assist you

nobody has the time these days to read every single word on any website.  our responsive ebook has been designed and written to always keep you up to date with all of the scented leaf pelargonium types that we grow.  you will have instant access to our ebook on your mobile, tablet or PC.  when we add a new scented geranium type to our Collection our ebook will also be updated and you will automatically have the detailed information of our new additions.  we do hope that you find our ebook a useful tool to aid you in successfully growing your scented geraniums.

we grow over 100 types of scented geraniums and our website, we have been online for over 10 years, does have an enormous amount of information. here's a few key points that should assist you in making an informed choice when ordering scented leaf pelargonium from our unique Collection.

  • scent aroma of each individual type, perfumes are personal sense subjective.  the aroma that one person might smell, another will smell something quite different.  our Try Before You Buy Sample Leaves will assist you in making an informed choice, prior to ordering plants.  **we do not use chemical based feeds or pesticides, the leaves are safe to be ingested**
  • classification of scent aroma. the Discoverer of each species or the cultivar Grower who introduced the scented leaf pelargonium designated the scent aroma, not us.
  • size really does matter.  scented leaf pelargonium types are not uniform in growing habit and vary considerably.  from compact through to very tall and wide.  we have provided a guide to size at maturity in our Catalogue and this should be of great assistance to making an informed choice.  consider carefully the growing location and available space.  never be tempted to over plant.
  • ordering info.
October, we add anticipated availability for Spring delivery. ordering very early is recommended as demand is always high.
by early February we always have a substantial waiting to be dispatched queue.  orders are dispatched by the date received plus weekly availability. we do not dispatch immediately on receipt of an order.
June to September, we add stock availability weekly and post within 1 to 3 days.

  • months of the year we post scented geraniums. weather permitting from late March through to September, this varies each year.  If a Spring is very cold, dispatch would be delayed until late April.

  • all potted plants are guaranteed for 14 days from the day of advised posting. after 14 days the onus of successfully growing on passes to the customer.

  • basic pelargonium growing info.  see our Downloads sub category.  further downloads added regularly.
sorry, we do not provide advice on planting schemes or recommend individual named types.  we are unable to give gardening lessons.
we sincerely hope that you enjoy browsing through our responsive ebook and our amazing scented leaf pelargonium collection and are inspired to grow at least one or two.  from feedback that we receive once scented geraniums are discovered they do have a habit of becoming addictive, we know, as Scented Geraniums Anonymous includes us.

  P. birdbush pink and perkyScent/Aroma: ApricotLeaf:deeply lobed and slightly serrated, attractive mid green.Flower: a pretty soft shade of pink to the outer petals with a white centre, red feathering to the upper petals. Flowers are larger in size than many SLP's . Flowers are in abundance over many monthsGrowing Habit: Upright and semi-branching, makes a fairly large plant at maturity reaching approx. Ht. 24 - 36ins x a similar spread.Other Info: Sport of Madame Nonin, Breeder B. White, England. The BirdBush series of plants offers a wide variety of choice. View our YouTube Videos Annie & Guy's Comments:It is the extremely large and delicately coloured flowers that set this BirdBush type apart from the many others available. Flowers are stunning and quite exquisite. Pretty shaped leaves that are quite similar in appearance to Graveolens although a much darker green. To get the best from this type it does require plenty of 'leg' room and eventually will require a good sized pot/container - not a type to keep pot bound. In addition the delicate apricot scent wth subtle citrus undertones makes BirdBush Pink & Perky a Scented Geranium that will always be admired and enjoyed.

View our YouTube Videos Annie and Guy's Comments:BB Victoria is our favourite of all of the BirdBush types. The leaf is quite unusual compared with any other type of scented geranium and it is this that sets it apart and makes it different. Lovely spiced lime scent and pretty flowers. Not really suitable for in the home unless you have plenty of space and are able to accommodate a fairly large container as opposed to a plant pot!View our YouTube Videos Annie & Guy's Comments: We really do love the scent of this scented geranium as it is strong and very pleasant. We are a little confused by the referral to a wormwood scent as we have no idea what this would smell like. For us as the name implies, roseum, we really do pick up on the rose scent/aroma. This type would really do well in a hanging basket and would put on a spectacular display. One of our jumbo starter sized plants would readily fill a 18ins hanging basket without any problem.

Pelargonium papilionaceum is a monster of a scented geranium and is not one for the novice or faint hearted. It is a tough plant that needs to be well maintained to do really well. Easy to care for and not fussy. Thin out in the centre occasioanlly to prevent decaying leaf build up.View our YouTube Videos Annie & Guy's Comments:One of the smaller growing types of Scented Geraniums, which makes it excellent as a house plant. Will happily stay in a smaller sized plant pot (e.g. 2 to 3 ltrs) and doesn't need potting on so frequently as many other Scenteds do. Final plant pot size should be in the region of 6 to 12 inches in depth and across the top, no smaller. Variegation is pretty and is set off by the masses of dainty white flowers. Good type for beginners as Creamy Nutmeg is not fussy and is easy to care for.

I originally sent off for 6 types and Crispum Variegatum was one of these. I remember being amazed at the strong lemon scent and the variegated foliage is one of the finest looking of all of the SLP's. The stiff upright growing habit is excellent for a house plant as it doesn't spread sideways like many of the other types.

This is the only time that we have come across a Scented Leaf Pelargonium with such an amazing variegation. The gold edging to the leaf is enough to make you reach for your sunglasses, as it really is as bright as the sun. Originating from the USA this type is not freely available and it is our absolute pleasure that we have been able to add Cy's Sunburst to our Collection. Ht. from 18ins to 2m with a similar spread. Can be kept to a reasonable size by regular pruning.Other Info: Species dwarf shrub - Parent of several modern hybrid types. Latin species name fulgidum translates to shining or bright coloured, referring to the brilliantly coloured flowers. In its natural habitat this Species provides food for many wild birds. The hairy leaves trap moisture during the night hours which provides water during the intense day heat. View our YouTube Videos Annie & Guy's Comments:The brightness of the scarlet red flower against the silvery grey-green foliage is stunning. Fulgidum is one of our favourite Species as it is really noticeable within a group of Scenteds. Having a pungent scent/aroma it isn't one of the 'pretty' perfumes but one has to appreciate its unique beauty and the fact that it has been a major Parent to many of the modern hybrids for probably 3 to 400 years.

After growing both types for a number of years we believe these to be 2 different scented pelargonium; no doubt the debate will go on. Either way they are both very pretty scented geraniums.

Flowers repeatedly over a long period. Leaves are good in recipes. View our YouTube Videos Annie and Guy's Comments:Sweet Miriam was introduced by John Cook to America in 1984. A 'chance' seedling according to John. A couple of years later Sweet Mimosa appeared in an English catalogue and as notable differences are slight it has been suggested that Sweet Mimosa was disreputably 'poached' from her American cousin. It would seem, therefore, that Sweet Mimosa may be an imposter although you will find her listed in the English Catalogues.

Excellent in large containers, hanging baskets and ideal ground cover during summer months. If growing inside, at maturity requires a large pot or container. Thin out centre and underneath to prevent leaf debris build up. See also Tomentosum Peppermint View our YouTube Videos Annie and Guy's Comments: Both Tomentosum Chocolate Mint and Peppermint make large plants very quickly. Mint Chocolate's peppermint fragrance is more subtle than Peppermint although both are distinctly minty. Excellent for herbal teas - infuse the leaves in hot water for a few minutes. Mint tea is relaxing, soothing, calms the nervous system and aids sleep.**Contrary to some of our Customers wishful thinking it does not smell or taste of chocolate!** The chocolate refers to the dark splodge on the leaves.Sorry to disappoint all chocoholics!

ent/aroma: strong peppermintLeaf: grey/green to mid green, soft and feel like velvet to the touch, medium to large. New leaves tend to be crinkly and extra grey but unfurl with age and turn a darker green and become a flatter shape. Underside remains grey resulting in a complimentary 2- tone colour way to the leaves. Flower: creamy white/mauve with purple feathering to upper petals, smallGrowing Habit: semi-branching and sprawling habit, makes a very large plant, Ht. 18" to 24" x 36" spread. We have 2 very large pots that are in excess of 4ft across! Makes a good ground cover plant during the summer months and will establish in all but the shadiest of spots. Too hot an area in the garden is not ideal, prefers some shade.Other Info: Species. Tomentosum is Latin for densely woolly with matted hairs and the covering of ‘wool’ helps to keep the plant cool and shaded and also helps to collect drops of moisture. Being as Tomentosum Peppermint is native to South Africa, with often very hot seasons, this is a handy survival mechanism.See also Tomentosum Chocolate Mint View our YouTube Videos Annie and Guy's Comments: Forget buying herbal teas, make your own - infuse the leaves from P. tomentosum peppermint just as you would an ordinary teabag. Drink a cup of peppermint tea before bedtime for a good night's sleep or at any time of the day to relax or to destress. This versatile and very large plant when mature has a multitude of uses. Great value. Top Tip - We would recommend growing Tomentosum Peppermint in between other scenteds as the strong peppermint perfume tends to help with minimising pests.

P. torento and/or P. ginger is listed a lot in the US Catalogues but not often here in the UK. As like all of the other types of Scenteds actual scents are a subjective and personal experience. Torento/ginger is classified as being a light ginger with citrus undertones and certainly some Visitors to our Nursery do immediately pick up on the ginger. I, personally, pick up more on the citrus with a faint ginger undertone. Scent apart, the pretty flowers are a delight!

Scent/Aroma: undefined, describes as aromatic and is very pleasantLeaf: succulent, crinkly textured, variable in form and size, sometimes hairy, deeply lobed. During a drought - not likely in the UK or Ireland - leaves fall off although the plant remains alive and well.Flower: creamy white, plum feathering to throat of upper petalsGrowing habit: sprawling shrublet with many scrambling branches, often trailing. Stems are brittle and are covered with soft hairs.Other Info: stunning scented geranium, excellent as a house plant, stunning in hanging baskets for the summer months outside. Flowers prolifically over many months.the following information source was plantzafricaThe nomenclature of this species is confusing and with both P. fragile and P. tripartitum being names for the plant in the past. Koos Roux of the Compton herbarium ( pers comm.) explains it thus:Starting at the earliest date; Burm.f. in 1759 published Geranium trifidum. In 1797 Jacquin published Pelargonium trifidum. These taxa I assume were based on different types and must therefore be treated as different taxa altogether. In 1800 Willdenow transferred Burman's Geranium to Pelargonium - thus Pelargonium trifidum(Burm.f.) Willd. This combination in Pelargonium is predated by Jacquin's Pelargonium trifidum (1797). Andrews describedGeranium fragile in 1798 and therefore postdated Geranium trifidum Burm.f. (1759) and Pelargonium trifidum Jacq. (1797) and therefore has no standing. The correct name is Pelargonium trifidumJacq..It was also known as Pelargonium tripartitum because Knuth (1912) disregarded the earliest specific epithet fragile of Andrews (1798).The brittle-stalked pelargonium was introduced into England in 1792 by prominent nurserymen James Lee and Lewis Kennedy.Ecology Pelargonium trifidum is pollinated by long-tongue flies. Pelargonium seed is interesting in that, attached to the elliptic seed, is a feathered, tail-like structure that is coiled in a spiral arrangement. This tail causes the seed to twist around in the wind and to drill itself into the soil in a corkscrew fashion, thus ensuring that most seeds produced (5 seeds per flower) have a good chance of germinating , (Brown, N. & Duncan, G. 2006).Uses and cultural aspects Although Pelargonium trifidum has no cultural use, horticulturally it is an attractive species. Pelargonium trifidum should be planted in an area that is well drained and receives full sun. (NOTE from Annie should be over wintered inside in UK and Ireland) Perfect growing conditions will allow it to grow to 1 m, therefore the shrublet should be planted in front of other taller growing shrubs, but behind low-growing plants. The flowers are large and will be a beautiful attraction in the garden.View our YouTube Videos Annie & Guy's Comments: We had this type a few years ago and loved it as it is so pretty, flowers are amazing. When we relocated in 2011 the removal people somehow managed to destroy quite a few of our Parent plants and P. trifidum was unfortunately one of these. Thankfully we have trifidum back in our Collection and we are confident that she will be an enoromous hit with our Followers.
